Praying for Revival
(Luke 11:13)

We have a great Christian heritage in this country. Not only did the Pilgrims come here in 1620 to establish a godly community and further the Kingdom of God but others also came for the same purpose. John Winthrop was the founder and first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. In June of 1630, Winthrop with 700 people in 11 ships landed in Massachusetts Bay. This began the Great Migration which lasted 16 years where over 20,000 Puritans came to New England. They came to establish a godly commonwealth, a community ruled by Christian principles. In his famous sermon, A Model of Christian Charity, Winthrop stated, "For we must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill, the eyes of all people are upon us; so that if we shall deal falsely with our God in this work we have undertaken and so cause him to withdraw his present help from us, we shall be made a story and a by-word through the world." (America's God and Country by William J. Federer, p. 700) One of the greatest theologians produced by America was Jonathan Edwards. He was a pastor in Northhampton, Massachusetts for many years and a leader in the First Great Awakening. His writings have influenced generations of Christians. Our Christian heritage is great. Yet, today we are in need of another Great Awakening. Sin reigns from college professors who mock God to movies that are filled with filthy language. The nation is in need of repentance and a turning back to God. Only the Holy Spirit can bring about such a national repentance. We need to pray. God honors the prayers of His people whether they be few or many. We must ask Him to once again visit the nation with an outpouring of His Spirit as He has in times past.
