Our Sinful Condition
(Ephesians 2:1)
Alexander Whyte - pastor of St. George Free Church in Edinburgh, Scotland for about 50 years beginning in 1870 - experienced revival there. He wrote, "A Revival quickens dead men, touches men's imaginations, and sets loose their hearts....There is a Divine mystery about Revivals. God's sovereignty is in them. Just when His time comes, 'a nation shall be born in a day,' and it gives us a heart of hope to think of that....I may not live to see it. But the day will come when there will be a great Revival over the whole earth....Go on and preach His Gospel, for He has it in His seven-sealed book that there will be a time of refreshing till all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of God." ( Revivals in the Midst of the Years by Benjamin Rice Lacy, Jr., p. 9) Revivals quicken dead men. Psalm 85:6 says, "Wilt thou not turn again and quicken us, that thy people may rejoice in thee." (Geneva Bible) Today, we need a great revival that will quicken dead men. The reason is that men are dead in sin. This is our condition by nature. Because we are dead, God needs to intervene. Only God can make a dead man live. Today our nation is full of dead men and only God can make dead men live.
