Conviction in Regard to Righteousness
(John 16:10)

One of the things we see in a time of spiritual poverty in a land is a low view of righteousness. On the one hand, a view of a righteousness that says that things that a former generation would frown upon are now okay. Today, we have a low view of morality, a morality that falls short of God's moral law whether it pertains to sexual immorality, coarseness of language, or living together outside the bounds of marriage. The society no longer frowns upon things that were once considered sinful. On the other hand, there is a view that our righteousness is not that bad and there is no sense of our need of a better righteousness for we might even be good enough in the sight of God. There is no sense of our poverty of righteousness and our need of a more perfect righteousness to make us acceptable to God. Among many of our young people there is no big deal about this lack of righteousness. Who cares? Whatever? It is not a major concern. In times of true revival a proper view of righteousness is recovered. The Holy Spirit brings true conviction to us that we are really sinful after all and that our righteousness is not good enough and that we need a better righteousness. He points out our spiritual poverty of true righteousness and points us to a righteousness that is over and above us that we need in order to be saved. He points us to the righteousness of Christ without which none of us will be saved. He brings us to a point where we recognize our hopelessness and poverty in the sight of a Holy God and then points us to a better way.
